Why and How to Donate to the Department

Department Needs and Goals

Among the needs of the Chemical Engineering Department are the following:

1.    UO lab: The UO lab needs to become a world-class facility for both student education and for a department recruiting tool.  The UO lab needs at least four non-traditional experiments (bio, nano, etc.) to strengthen the diversity of education training.  We also need to label the experiments and replace existing experiments with ones that provide more education.  For instance, redoing the valve and fitting experiment where different pipe sizes, valve types, pipe smoothness, etc. can be interchanged would be beneficial.  The presentation of the experiments (modern-looking, etc.) also needs to improve.

2.   Undergraduate scholarships:  Some of these will be academic scholarships, but they also will include scholarships for participation in conferences for presentations (and perhaps other educational experiences) and participation in Global Engineering Outreach projects (humanitarian-based). We need to increase the undergraduate exposure at conferences and other venues and let others know the great abilities of our students.

3.   First-year graduate stipends.  We need graduate stipends for first-year students that would not require the use of current budget resources.  This would free up current wage resources for special student projects, increased mentoring funds, etc.

4.   Class demonstrations.  Due to varied learning styles, we need to strengthen class demonstrations that will give students exposure to more real-world applications, provide greater opportunities to explore “what-if” scenarios, and expose students to equipment or processes they will see in industry.

5.   Faculty development.  We need funds for faculty to attend safety workshops, ASEE meetings, explore educational tools, etc., all toward the goal of improving the student educational experience.
